PRESCRIPTION RENEWALS WITHOUT AN APPOINTMENT

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO RENEW A PRESCRIPTION:

Please click “Prescription Renewal” on your physician's booking page to see your options for how to make this request.

I have been charged a fee - why?

Currently, renewing a prescription without an appointment with your physician is not covered by OHIP. This is the case for all physicians in Ontario, and many physicians, both at our clinic and at clinics elsewhere, will invoice the patient directly for this service. This is to reflect the time and work it takes in order to renew a prescription, which is required regardless of whether the patient takes part in an appointment.

While it may seem like a trivial task, physicians are not able to fax off any medication refill without first checking that it is medically advisable to do so. This includes a careful review of your medical chart to ensure the medication should be renewed. There must be considerations taken to decide if the medication is safe to continue or if any follow up is required prior to renewal. Renewing medication through fax also introduces administrative costs, due to the processing that administrative staff must introduce when receiving/sending medical faxes.

The time that is required to process a prescription renewal by fax takes away from time that the physician and the clinic staff would otherwise be devoting to patient care during other appointments.

We appreciate your understanding in this matter.

HOW DO I AVOID THE PRESCRIPTION RENEWAL FEE?

If you would like to avoid a prescription refill fee, you are always welcome to book an appointment using the option on your physician’s Prescription Renewals page. This type of appointment is an OHIP-covered service.

Please be sure to request prescription renewals at least one week or more before your medication runs out. Should you need a prescription renewed more urgently, please book an urgent appointment instead using the same link.
