PATHWAYS FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES AT MAGENTA HEALTH
PRACTICING IN CANADA AS AN INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATE

For many international medical graduates (IMGs), the path to practicing in Canada has historically been complex and time-consuming.
In recent years, that process has become more accessible, with new opportunities to apply, relocate, and begin practicing quickly — sometimes as soon as you arrive, depending on the steps completed beforehand.
Canada is increasingly opening pathways for internationally trained physicians, and in many cases, Canadian citizenship is not required to begin practicing.
Physicians trained in countries such as Australia, Ireland, the UK, and the USA have more direct routes to licensure, with fewer barriers compared to previous years. Learn more about eligibility through the CPSO’s pathways here.
While there are still important considerations — including work permits, licensing requirements, and provincial regulations — the process is more streamlined than it has been historically.
If you’re looking to understand your eligibility and next steps, we recommend reviewing the Government of Canada’s guidance for international medical doctors.
BUILDING AN INDEPENDENT PRACTICE AT MAGENTA HEALTH
If your goal is to practice independently in Canada, the requirements and pathways can vary depending on your training background. Consult the CPSO for more detailed information.
We’ve supported physicians transitioning from the USA, UK, Ireland, and Australia.
At Magenta Health, there are opportunities to build a practice at one of our locations, along with occasional locum roles depending on availability. If you’re interested in working with our team, explore our current opportunities here.

GAINING EXPERIENCE AT MAGENTA HEALTH

For physicians who trained outside countries with more direct pathways (e.g., the UK, USA, Australia, or Ireland), there are still meaningful ways to gain experience within the Canadian healthcare system.
Magenta Health periodically offers opportunities for:
Clinical staff roles
Physician extender positions
Other healthcare support roles
These positions can provide valuable Canadian experience and exposure to the healthcare system while working toward longer-term goals. To view current openings, visit our opportunities page.
ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR INTERNATIONALLY EDUCATED PHYSICIANS
We also encourage IMGs to explore external programs designed to support integration into the Canadian healthcare system.
Organizations like the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO) offer programs such as the federally funded Foreign Credentials Recognition (FCR) initiative, which helps internationally educated health professionals navigate the transition to working in Canada.
These programs may include:
One-on-one career counseling
Credential and licensing guidance
Job readiness workshops
Mentorship and networking opportunities
Paid Canadian work experience
Some programs also offer inter-provincial mobility and additional support services. Learn more about these programs and eligibility requirements through OCISO.
OUR SUPPORT FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES
While practicing in Canada still requires planning and effort, the landscape is evolving. With more structured pathways, targeted support programs, and greater employer involvement, IMGs now have more options than ever before.
At Magenta Health, we’re committed to supporting physicians at every stage of that journey — whether they are ready for independent practice or exploring opportunities to gain valuable Canadian experience.
We’ve also supported the launch and growth of more than 35 physician practices across our clinics, helping physicians transition smoothly into the Canadian healthcare system.
With our dedicated mentorship, hands-on guidance, and practical resources, IMGs can confidently take the next steps in their Canadian medical careers.
